JOU3003 - Introduction to Journalism

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify sources and angles for multi-media content;
Demonstrate effective interviewing skills;
Produce multi-media content in an appropriate style;
Work effectively in a team;
Demonstrate basic knowledge of media law and regulation.

Content:

This module focusses on core journalism skills and is delivered in workshop sessions. Students will develop the ability to spot and develop stories and a variety of techniques in which to tell them in a range of media including online, social media, radio and television. The module will also include an introduction to the legal and regulatory issues that affect journalists.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will initially develop their skills in a classroom setting through a mixture of tuition, discussions and practical work. They will then progress to producing journalism in real-life settings, outside the classroom, with guidance from tutors. Equipment, including recording equipment for audio and TV, will be provided where necessary.

Formative feedback will be a high priority.

Further details relating to assessment
Students will have access to formative assessment in every module that they study on. This will usually take the form of feedback on specific tasks given in teaching sessions, online feedback, or feedback on outline plans for assessed work.

Portfolios 1 and 2: Both portfolios comprise examples of practical multi-media journalism produced by the students.

*News Test and Interview (for students who wish to progress to an accredited programme): Students who wish to progress to the accredited programmes, BA Journalism or BA Broadcast Journalism, must pass a news test and be interviewed by a tutor. This is in order to meet entry requirements set by the NCTJ and BJTC accreditation bodies. Support will be provided on these aspects. Students who wish to progress to non-accredited programmes are exempt from this requirement.

Assessment:

001 Portfolio 1; equivalent to 1,250 words; end of semester 1 50%
002 Portfolio 2; equivalent to 1,250 words; end of semester 2 50%
003 News test interview; pass/fail; end of semester 2 %
