ICE7122 - Understanding the Wider Context of Higher Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate the external drivers that underpin Higher Education practices.
Critically evaluate metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of aspects of Higher Education practices.
Critically engage with the customs and practices within Higher Education that are driven from outside the university context.
Reflect on their own teaching practice in the light of D2 UKPSF criteria for Fellowship of the HEA.

Content:

This module will help participants to understand the wider context that underpins much of what we do in UK universities. It will critically engage with subjects such as TEF, REF, KEF and the employability agenda in order to understand more fully why we do what we do as part of university life, teaching and research.

The module will also enable participants to understand that some of what we do is driven by external bodies (e.g. UK Research Council, QAA and the Office for Students) about which we may know very little at the start of our careers. Participants will be encouraged to take a critical view of all that is involved in the wider context that underpins UK Universities.

Finally, the module will include preparatory sessions for the assessment and in particular for assessment 2, which is mapped against D2 criteria of the UKPSF.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching sessions will vary from face to face sessions to online sessions. A Microsoft Teams site will be set up to facilitate further discussion and debate beyond lectures and seminars. Moodle will be used to display and share PowerPoint presentations, suitable resources for reading and reflection and guidance on assessment. It will also be a key resource for sending out student communications regarding the programme and for keeping participants up to date regarding the requirements of the programme in relation to learning each week and assessment. Drop-in sessions will be available on request from the Programme Co-ordinator. These will enable participants to gain one to one support and to ask questions regarding assessment and learning in general.

The module will be delivered by various colleagues who hold specific roles in research, teaching and quality assurance at Leeds Trinity, so that participants will get the best possible opportunity to engage with the wider context of their practice.

The Essay is mapped against module learning outcomes 1-3. Participants must show a critical understanding of a least TWO topics covered in the module in their 2,000-word essay.

The Portfolio is mapped against module learning outcome 4 and Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF. Individuals must demonstrate a broad understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as key contributions to high quality student learning, and must be able to provide evidence of:

D2.I Successful engagement across ALL Five Areas of Activity;
D2.II Appropriate knowledge and understanding across ALL aspects of Core Knowledge;
D2. III A commitment to ALL Professional Values;
D2. IV Successful engagement in appropriate teaching practices related to the Areas of Activity;
D2. V Successful incorporation of subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship within the above activities, as part of an integrated approach to academic practice;
D2.VI Successful engagement in continuing professional development in relation to teaching, learning assessment and, where appropriate, related professional practices.

The submission must comprise:
1) Action Plan of D2
2) Four Teaching Observations
3) Evidence of achievement against D2
4) A 2000-word narrative mapped against D2.
As this is an accredited programme, all components must be passed.
