ICE7102 - Essentials of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically analyse core concepts in Teaching and Learning practice, e.g. constructive alignment, constructivism, feedback for learning, learning outcomes.
Critically evaluate their own teaching practice through peer observation of teaching and completion of the D1 HEA Associate Fellow criteria.
Critically evaluate their own teaching through reflective commentary and critical engagement with relevant pedagogical literature.

Content:

Participants will be introduced to key concepts such as constructive alignment, active learning, learning styles, learning outcomes, curriculum design models and the essentials of feedback for learning. There will be a strong emphasis placed upon the need to be critical of these concepts and to reflect critically on how they relate directly to teaching practice in the lecture/seminar context.

Participants are expected to meet the criteria for D1 of the HEA Associate Fellow criteria in this module, so a key focus of part of the assessment will be on meeting the criteria for D1 of the UKPSF.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching sessions will vary from face to face sessions to online sessions. A Microsoft Teams site will be set up to facilitate further discussion and debate beyond lectures and seminars. Moodle will be used to display and share PowerPoint presentations, suitable resources for reading and reflection and guidance on assessment. It will also be a key resource for sending out student communications regarding the programme and for keeping candidates up to date regarding the requirements of the programme in relation to learning each week and assessment. Drop-in sessions will be available on request from the Programme Co-ordinator. These will enable candidates to gain one to one support and to ask questions regarding assessment and learning in general.

The Essay is mapped against Learning Outcome 1 and comprises an essay of 2,000 words that reflects critically on an area contained within the module that relates to the ‘Essentials of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education’.

The Portfolio is mapped against Descriptor 1 of the UKPSF. Individuals must be able to provide evidence of:

D1.I Successful engagement with at least two of the Five Areas of Activity;
D1.II. Successful engagement in appropriate teaching and practices related to these Areas of Activity;
D1.III. Appropriate Core Knowledge and understanding of at least K1 and K2;
D1.IV. A commitment to appropriate Professional Values in facilitating others’ learning;
D1.V. Relevant professional practices, subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship within the above activities;
D1.VI Successful engagement, where appropriate, in professional development activity related to teaching, learning and assessment responsibilities.

The submission must comprise:
1) A Teaching Observation;
2) An Audit of D1;
3) Evidence against D1;
4) A 2,000-word narrative mapped against D1.

As this is an accredited programme, all components must be passed.
