FDA5032 - Understanding Children's Behaviour

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
assemble causes of human behaviour, both compliant and non-compliant through social, physical and emotional origins;
explain how their own behaviours/practices relate to those of others;
formulate links to theories and propose techniques and strategies for dealing with behavioural issues;
categorise behavioural management strategies in use in their workplace in relation to their effectiveness;
construct a written argument.

Content:

The module will allow students to understand the origins of human behaviour and how this might lead to compliance/non-compliance in the workplace.

Theories surrounding aspects of behaviour will be investigated, for example conditioning, resilience, motivation, enculturalisation, attachment and psychosocial factors and students will draw on these in identifying practices within the workplace.

Students will reflect on their own beliefs, skills and practices and reassess their effectiveness in dealing with the management of behaviour.

Students will be encouraged to draw upon models of good practice and to engage in new/more effective practices based on their understanding of theory, such as restorative practice, conflict resolution, motivational strategies and the development of resilience.

Students will be expected to gather and critique workplace data, comparing and contrasting this with research findings.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will address the following Foundation Degree participants:

- Supporting Children and Families in Social Contexts.

Learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, seminars, e-working, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on team experience and peer support, large and small group discussions, problem-solving activities and individual and paired working.

Students may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate.

Study skills will continue to be developed. During the course of each session there will be opportunities for tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives.

Students will continue to maintain their Personal Development Log during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the students' identification of needs.
