ENG7003 - English Language and Research

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

1 - Systematically distinguish and analyse features of the English language with use of appropriate terminology.
2 - Recognise and evaluate the ethical and legal considerations involved in research.
3 - Use initiative and collaboration to propose an appropriate research project.
4 - Clearly present a research project proposal, evaluating it in terms of broader methodologies of data collection and analysis.

Content:

This module will develop your academic skills. You will study the foundations of English grammar, register, pragmatics, phonological transcription, and transcription and analysis of spoken discourse, thereby developing your awareness of English(es). You will be introduced to a range of methods in data collection and consideration of any ethical and legal issues in collecting and presenting data. Furthermore, you will familiarise yourself with qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning on the module happens both during ‘live’ classroom time and through ‘pre’- and ‘post’-class guided engagement with tasks and resources. You are expected to come to class having done the specified preparation, such as reading and other set tasks. For example, you will be asked to critically engage with research and methodologies underpinning it. Classroom interaction takes the form of workshops, which enable dynamic learning through a range of different formats to suit your needs and the requirements of the topic. Classroom time will be flexibly spent with mini lectures, individual tasks, pair work, group activities, discussions and formative feedback on individual and group work. Specific attention will be given to student socialisation to master’s level study and the development of study skills such as time management, critical reading, academic writing and productive engagement in classroom discussions and with peers in the form of a group presentation.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

The first assessment is a language data analysis in which you will systematically describe and analyse both spoken and written texts, identifying elements of grammar, register, pragmatics, phonology and conversation.

The second assessment is a group presentation for which the group will develop, evaluate and contextualise a research proposal, taking into account methods of data collection and analysis as well as ethical issues. Groups will ideally comprise three to four students and will be formed in the course of the module.

There will be an ‘assignment unpacking’ session for each component. Throughout the module, summative assessment will be preceded by formative exercises and feedback, such as practice analysis, short written pieces, oral or written reports on set tasks and referencing exercises.

Full details are available in the Module Handbook.
