ENG6703 - Writing Project

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Students will define a research project or creative project of their choice, in consultation with an appointed member of staff; formulate a proposal; obtain approval for their proposal and research methods from the School Research Ethics Committee; complete the approved project, under the supervision of the appointed member of staff; and complete a dissertation or piece of creative writing based on the project, appropriately presented and supported by scholarly apparatus. This could be a literary or linguistics dissertation, or prose fiction, poetry, drama, a short film, a serious article, or a blog post. This process will culminate in an assessed oral presentation by each student. Following this, students will work on their projects, supported by workshops with other students and one-to-one meetings with tutors. Students will keep a notebook throughout, and will use this to write a formal reflective commentary on the process of formulating, drafting and completing the work.

The negotiated writing project needs to be 6,000 words or equivalent of creative work in order to allow scope for the breadth of exploration expected at Level 6. The presentation at the beginning of Semester 2 describes the project plan and the critical commentary at the end of Semester 2 measures the project against the plan.

See indicative content section for further information on the assessments.

There will be an early opportunity for some formative exercises that will help unpack the assessment, clarifying the nature of the task and the marking criteria.
