ENG6643 - Applied Linguistics: Professional Learning Through Work

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Students will begin the module by developing their approach to an employment-based project or placement incorporating elements of linguistic knowledge, and by gaining further insight into the applications of such knowledge in the workplace and its contribution to society through contributions from invited speakers. They will continue developing their insight into the application of linguistic knowledge in employment contexts by undertaking their project or placement, as well as by constructing an overview of the academic area of Applied Linguistics as an interdisciplinary field, the different areas of work which come under this heading and links between them. This element of the module will reinforce the different ways in which linguistic knowledge and research contribute to modern workplaces and societies. Indicative content includes lexicography, language in legal contexts, translation, and teaching English. Subsequently, students will explore in more detail the problems faced and methods used in clinical linguistics to give a solid foundation in a specific professional application of linguistic knowledge. The emphasis throughout will be on the link between linguistics and employment and its social applications, and the second half of the module will cement this further by having students focus on evaluating their own employment-based project or placement and working towards the final project assessment.

Further details relating to assessment
Assignment 1: Students will outline their employment project.

Assignment 2:An essay describing and evaluating a range of areas in Applied Linguistics. The essay will include a case study on language pathology. Students will integrate academic and employability aspects in the essay, demonstrating an awareness of the role of Applied Linguistics in practice, while reflecting more broadly on the employability outcomes in linguistics.

Assignment 3: Work-based project or placement to be negotiated and arranged by the student with support from their supervisor.

Assignment 4: Final project report and reflection following a negotiated format.

Formal assessment will be preceded by some formative exercises (e.g. practice proposal, practice analysis, referencing exercises, brief report on a research task, etc.) and an ‘assessment unpacking’ session, along with supervisor feedback for project elements.

In relation to the work-placement, a tripartite sign-off form will be required. This form will include the details of the project outline by the student, will be verified by the employer and will be signed off by the study supervisor. This should also include an agreed pattern of working hours.

The employer will also be asked to submit 3 appraisal forms (end Sem 1, mid-Feb Sem 2 and end Sem 2).

Work-Based Project or Placement must be passed in line with University regulations.
