ENG6253 - Literature of Enchantment

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The focus of this module is children’s literature from Gothic 'classics' and feminist fairy tales, to children’s literature and teen fictions. Topics will include, for example, picture books, teen fiction and animal stories. The module explores the ways elements such as content, genre, characterisation and style are part of the cultures of childhood. Students will be encouraged to examine works in relation to ideological, cultural and historical contexts and to socio-cultural and political debates.

Further details relating to assessment
There will be an early opportunity for some formative exercises that will help unpack the assessment, clarifying the nature of the task and the marking criteria. Students will learn through stages in their assessment, e.g. by negotiating their assignment, by presenting research informally and formally, and by scrutinising drafts in class, and through peer and tutor formative and final feedback.

Coursework 1: This will take the form of a presentation on fairytales to test skills in research and theoretical application.

Coursework 2: This will take the form of an essay on a topic negotiated with the module tutor and will also test for research skills and the application of critical/theoretical perspectives.

Assessment:

001 Presentation; 10 mins; end of semester 1 40%
002 Essay; 4,000 words; end of semester 2 60%
