ENG5613 - History of English 2: From Shakepeare’s English to Global Englishes

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Students will begin the module by learning about some of the characteristics of Early Modern English and key historical developments in the emergence and standardisation of Modern English, particularly as reflected in early printed editions of Shakespeare and in continuing regional variation in speech. In the second part of the module they will be introduced to some theoretical frameworks for understanding and describing the global spread of English and will analyse selected texts from a range of Global Englishes.

Further details relating to assessment
The Negotiated Assessment will be an artefact highlighting how passages from Shakespeare texts can be analysed to illustrate changes in grammar, orthography, vocabulary etc in the history of English.

The essay will present an overview of the spread of English beyond England and a case study of the history of English in a specific country or region.

There will be an early opportunity for some formative exercises that will help unpack the assessment, clarifying the nature of the task and the marking criteria.
