DSM6145 - Final Major Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Self-direct, manage and complete an individual project;
2 - Demonstrate developed and nuanced organisational and planning skills;
3 - Show confidence and high level of skill and understanding in their chosen project subject area;
4 - Identify and apply established principles, concepts, theoretical frameworks and industry relevant approaches to your chosen project; and,
5 - Create a project which is professionally presented and executed.

Content:

This module enables you to research, develop and produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates your learning and experience gained on your course of study. This can be an independent or collaborative assignment.

The module coordinator must approve the concept before you proceed and then both tutor and you construct a project agreement between you. You will be assigned a course specific tutor, who will provide theoretical and practical support for your final major project.

For example, students interested in film could launch a Kickstarter campaign in Semester 1 and produce a short film in Semester 2. Students interested in online content creation could research and create a professional YouTube channel and populate it with compelling content.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module uses ten introductory workshops, followed by regular bespoke one to one tutorials, designed to support you and your chosen project. Students will be recommended to begin with tutorials weekly, but then adjust this schedule to fit their project development plan appropriately. The methods are designed to reflect the workplace and project and time management skills. Students should have creative freedom to explore freelancing and self-starting employment opportunities, and the Learning and teaching strategy supports this. It also allows the space and time for specialist mentorship, technical assistance or other relevant staff support, which will be negotiated per student, in line with the project and individual needs.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Presentation - In Semester 1 you will give an individual presentation to a panel which consists of a ‘state of the project’ address. This is intended as a staging post so the student can show the development and pre-production work done thus far, critically evaluate it and show adaptive goals and project outlines if needed.

Final Project - In Semester 2 you will develop and finalise your individual project, submitting your work in line with your chosen media platform. This may take the form of a script, film, digital content creation, web design, VFX or written piece of research.

Early Assessment:there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks, and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.

Full details on assessments are contained within the Module Handbook.
