On sucessful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Use research skills and a critical understanding of the role of the chosen sector in society to devise, plan and produce either a collaborative project with an employer or a skills development project with a tutor;
2 - Apply their sector knowledge in practice to help solve a problem for an employer or develop their employability skills;
3 - Analyse and interpret the results of a collaborative work or skills development project and draw appropriate conclusions; and,
4 - Manage their time in a self-directed project and use reflective learning to improve performance.
This module is part of a connected and work-based academic programme embedded across all three years of the degree. You will draw on the professional skills attained at Levels 4 and 5 and further develop these to negotiate, deliver and reflect on a collaborative project with an external organisation. You will negotiate assessment modes to provide the flexibility for you to apply theoretical understanding and practical work-based development in a chosen context. This could include a work-based project or intervention or an alternative professional development project within your work setting. You will be expected to negotiate a project with your work partner or prior placement provider that meets the needs of both the work partner and your skills development.
In a module containing a negotiated and self-managed project, you will initially engage in taught sessions to establish the assessment methods. You will then engage in further support through scheduled mentoring and tutorial sessions to support project completion.
An initial series of lectures will outline how to negotiate a collaborative project with an employer and how the project will then develop the employability skills relevant to you and your graduate ambitions.
Regular tutoring from the module leader alongside mentoring from subject relevant academics will support you as you negotiate, develop, deliver and reflect on your project.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
Project Outline and Risk Assessment - You will need to submit a project proposal outlining your intended outcomes, along with a comprehensive risk assessment. Think of the proposal as if you were applying for a job and ensure your risk assessment covers all aspects of your project, including on-site activities, desk work, post-production, data management, travel and any other potential risks. Your goal is to demonstrate that your project is both skilled and safe.
Work Based Hours - You are required to complete a minimum of 40 workplace hours. This assessment is pass/fail, and you must provide evidence of your completed hours and the associated outputs. If you fail this component but pass the numerically graded part of the module, your overall outcome will be capped at 39 Fail on Requirements. Your project partner will also be asked to complete two appraisal forms, which will be used as part of the evidence of your output.
Presentation - You will submit a reflective pre-recorded presentation about your work project. In your reflection, you should critically analyse your experience, what you have learned and how it has shaped your skills and understanding.
Please note that Work-Based Hours are part of the Professional Pathway and must be passed as per University regulations. Full details and guidance for all assessments are contained within the Module Handbook, on the VLE and during in-class briefings.
