On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically analyse various therapeutic approaches within education to distinguish appropriate responses to support children and young people with social, emotional and mental needs
Create artefact(s) to support the practice or professional development of colleagues in an area of therapeutic practice
Critically reflect on your own developing professional practice in using evidence-based intervention strategies.
This module will introduce you to a range of therapeutic practices employed within educational settings for children with social, emotional and mental health needs. This module will focus on developing your practice with children and young people using evidence-based intervention strategies. You will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of a range of interventions including direct work with children and young people.
Practices and interventions explored will be centred on harnessing the voice of the child and will include modes of group work, cognitive behaviour strategies, pyscho-educational approaches for anxiety and low mood, bereavement, mindfulness, art-based and creative interventions and other therapeutic style practice. Evidence-based outcomes measures will be explored to promote effective and ethical monitoring and evaluation of outcomes in working therapeutically with children and young people.
You will have the opportunity to make clear links between theory and practice. A particular focus will be an examination of the evidence base for various types of approaches and interventions and the limitations of these in research studies. A key approach will be psychologically informed practice when working with vulnerable and at-risk children and young people, including any issues linked to safeguarding.
Reflective practice skills will be developed in teaching sessions linked to the therapeutic practices being studied. You will be expected to develop and demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to critically reflect on their own practice and learning using scenarios for group discussion and case study examples. Students will be given the opportunity to develop a resource for the professional development of prospective colleagues, centred around a specific approach or intervention. These strategies will prepare students for future employability and working in various fields in education which employ these practices.
The teaching and learning methods for this module are underpinned by programme strategy that aligns with Leeds Trinity University Learning, Teaching and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026) in that it aims to transform the way we work co-creatively with you, the student, how we connect you and our learning and teaching with the outside world and societal issues. Through this approach we support you on a personalised, values-based and career-led journey through your studies. You will be taught in a variety of methods including problem-based learning using case studies, reflective practice workshops, flipped classrooms; traditional lectures; including participatory workshops which utilise co-creative exercises that will also influence learning and teaching methods. Additional online material will be supplemented using a variety of media and resources, ranging from videos and selected textbooks and articles. The teaching will be face to face and online tutorials may be used to support student progression. Guest speakers will be used to develop an understanding of current educational practice. The practice of relational pedagogy and person-centred planning will be showcased by staff in their delivery style. Further detail on the specific teaching and learning including how these have been developed in response to student feedback, can be found in the module handbook.
