CYP6033 - Research Project

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module provides an opportunity for students to complete an independent (supervised) investigation in an area of interest related to the degree. It will entail application of the principles and practices introduced in L5 Research Methods and offer students the opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding of a specific area within a work setting. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 80 hours (normally between October and March) within a work setting. The work setting could be an employer from the public, private or community/voluntary/faith sector. Students will identify an area of inquiry from their programme to reflect upon within the work-setting and then choose one of the following projects:

Route 1 - To undertake a work-based study project that has been discussed and agreed with the work-place setting and approved by the student’s study supervisor, ; or

Route 2 - To undertake a skills-development project that relates to the application and completion of professionally relevant training and certification, in agreement with their study supervisor.

Students on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies programme may be able to complete the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner competencies alongside Route 2 of this module for an additional certifcate. To attain the additional certificate, students will need to complete a minimum of 150 hours (i.e. a further 70 hours) in a suitable placement, be observed in the placement setting (at least twice) and undertake a VIVA on completion of the placement. This is in addition to the assessment for this module.

Further details relating to assessment
See Module Handbook for further details.

As part of the semester 1 sessions, students will be asked to select one of the two routes and prepare a project outline / route plan which includes the intended approach and outcomes set in the context of their learning, relevant literature and sector best practice.

In relation to the work-placement, a tripartite sign-off form will be required. This form will include the details of the project outline by the student, will be verified by the employer and will be signed off by the study supervisor. This should also include an agreed pattern of working hours.

The employer will also be asked to submit 3 appraisal forms (end Sem 1, mid-Feb Sem 2 and end Sem 2).

The format of the Report to be discussed and agreed with the Study Supervisor; this is a negotiated assessment opportunity and may include a research dissertation; a journal article; a portfolio; a conference paper and presentation etc. Students working towards the Early Childhood Graduate Competencies (alongside Route 2) will need to prepare a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their learning. See Handbook for the Graduate Competencies for further information.

Placement must be passed in line with University regulations.
