CYP6025 - Family Support and Leading Interventions in Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically analyse the philosophies, values and ethics associated with parental involvement in education and demonstrate critically reflective practice linked to these.
Critically evaluate evidence informed approaches to leading collaborative interventions in education and create practice-based solutions to meeting need.
Critically reflect on the challenges experienced by both professionals and parents to support children’s engagement and achievement within the educational system through a practice-based lens.

Content:

The module supports you to understand how settings can take a ‘Whole-Family Approach’ to education and especially the work with children and families who have a family or child need around mental health and SEND. You will critically analyse the role played by parents in fostering a child’s engagement and achievement within the education system, examinehow a child’s systemic environment of home life and key familial relationships can impact upon their readiness to learn and the impact that parental needs and challenges can bring to any given situation. You will explore different interventions and approaches that can be utilised by settings to foster an ethos of collaborative partnership work with parents, promoting the active involvement and co-operation of parents with their child’s education, with the aim of removing all barriers to learning and helping children to attend school feeling safe, physically, mentally and emotionally equipped to engage and learn. As part of this, you will develop a critical understanding of the cultural perspectives around parental involvement and a range of interventions to support parents and children. You will be introduced to several parenting programmes used within early help and education settings to evaluate their usefulness and potential ethical and philosophical considerations. Interventions to support families with CYP who have additional needs linked to SEND and Mental Health will be a focus within this module for example in the case study material used. You will develop their skills in leading and evaluating interventions for such children and families.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching and learning methods for this module are underpinned by programme strategy that aligns with Leeds Trinity University Learning, Teaching and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026) in that it aims to transform the way we work co-creatively with you, the student, how we connect you and our learning and teaching with the outside world and societal issues. Through this approach we support you on a personalised, values-based and career-led journey through your studies. You will be taught in a variety of methods including problem-based learning using case studies, reflective practice workshops, flipped classrooms; traditional lectures; including participatory workshops which utilise co-creative exercises that will also influence learning and teaching methods. Additional online material will be supplemented using a variety of media and resources, ranging from videos and selected textbooks and articles. The teaching will be face to face and online tutorials may be used to support student progression. Guest speakers will be used to develop an understanding of current educational practice. The practice of relational pedagogy and person-centred planning will be showcased by staff in their delivery style. Further detail on the specific teaching and learning including how these have been developed in response to student feedback, can be found in the module handbook.
