CYP6023 - Critical Issues in the lives and Education of Young Children

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module builds on prior learning at Levels 4 and 5 and offers you the opportunity to develop further critical reasoning and analytical skills in relation to philosophical, historical, psychological and pedagogical concepts of early childhood.

Study on this module will include:
• Foundational and contemporary views including global and cultural theories of early childhood, education and teaching;
• The rethinking of early childhood in the context of educational practices
• Applied ethics: issues and dilemmas
• Social justice and restorative practices
• Leadership of current issues within early childhood education, including the impact of leadership at political levels and practical levels.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Formal scheduled teaching and learning activities.This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led.

Guided independent study
Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

Further details relating to assessment
The negotiated assessment will be an individual task where the student provides a critical analysis of different concepts of early childhood and the impact of leadership. This will be negotiated between the student and tutor and could be: essay, report, presentation, production of a resource of film. The topic and system to be dissimilar in character to other Level 6 assessments.

Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into sessions throughout the module.
