CYP6003 - Mental Health in the 21st Century

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module addresses a range of issues influencing the lives of children, their families and society. The first semester will consider mental health in the broad context of families, society and social justice, studying:

• Legislation, attitudes and services – changes over time;
• Conditions of mental health;
• Mental health problems : associated consequences and issues;
• Cultural differences.

The second semester will focus on positive approaches to mental health in the early years of life. Study in this semester will include:

• Risk factors, identification and support strategies for babies and young children;
• Significance of attachment, resilience and self-regulation;
• Role of high-quality early years provision in mitigating risk;
• Working in partnership to address needs;
within a defined theme of cultural issues and ethical awareness and practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Formal scheduled teaching and learning activities. This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and groupwork/tutorials, some of which will be student-led.

Guided independent study
Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

Formative assessment will be ongoing throughout Semester 1.

The assessments will include preparing information relating to aspects of mental health as an awareness raising campaign along with an opportunity to role play the contributions of different practitioners working in the field of mental health. Some aspects of this module may be taught with students from other programmes and / or practitioners to broaden perspectives and enable discussion and debate in preparing for assessments.

001 Plan and deliver mental health awareness campaign; 3,000 words; formative = ongoing through sem 1; summative = end sem 1 50%
002 Role play; observation & evaluation; 3,000 word equivalent; role play; penultimate week delivery; evaluation semester 2 50%
