CYP5093 - Trauma Informed and Responsive Practices

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Understand and distinguish appropriate responses in practice to children and young people with experiences of trauma and adversity
Evaluate individual and organisational approaches and models to trauma informed practice
Demonstrate in-depth of knowledge and understanding of childhood trauma using research to examine and justify practical approaches to support trauma perpetration and trauma prevention.

Content:

This module will introduce you to approaches to trauma informed and responsive, relational and restorative practices employed across myriad service provision contexts, and in education. Seminal studies will be introduced which explore the prevalence and impact of trauma in children and young people, supporting the rationale for trauma informed practices.

You will learn about the principles of trauma-informed practice and the theory underpinning this. The module will present multiple models of trauma-informed practices employed on individual and whole system level. This will include links to the impact of inequalities on specific communities who have experienced exclusionary practices which have resulted in trauma. For example, children who are refuges and have experienced trauma could be used as a case study to look a wider system level responses to meeting need with multiagency working methods and organisational approaches.

The module will enable you to develop responses in practice to children and young people with experiences of trauma, distinguishing between various responses to find appropriate ways of working with trauma experienced children and young people in an inclusionary manner. The ethics of working with this cohort of children and young people will be explored and you will reflect upon this, utilising relevant professional frameworks and theoretical models to do so.

This module will focus on the developing practice needed to address the needs of trauma experienced children and young people in various service and educational contexts.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching and learning methods for this module are underpinned by programme strategy that aligns with Leeds Trinity University Learning, Teaching and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026) in that it aims to transform the way we work co-creatively with you, the student, how we connect you and our learning and teaching with the outside world and societal issues. Through this approach we support you on a personalised, values-based and career-led journey through your studies. You will be taught in a variety of methods including problem-based learning using case studies, reflective practice workshops, flipped classrooms; traditional lectures; including participatory workshops which utilise co-creative exercises that will also influence learning and teaching methods. Additional online material will be supplemented using a variety of media and resources, ranging from videos and selected textbooks and articles. The teaching will be face to face and online tutorials may be used to support student progression. Guest speakers will be used to develop an understanding of current educational practice. The practice of relational pedagogy and person-centred planning will be showcased by staff in their delivery style. Further detail on the specific teaching and learning including how these have been developed in response to student feedback, can be found in the module handbook.
