CYP3003 - Introduction to Children and Families

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Outline the development of children and state how families and professionals can support progress.
Understand the ways that family background can influence children’s social and emotional development and life chances.
Outline policy and practice in relation to children and families in the UK.
Outline and explain how social inclusion, early help and effective safeguarding can be promoted by practitioners.

Content:

This module looks to introduce childhood and families. Concepts will be studied around the way a child develops, socially and emotionally, and the influence the family has upon development. Psychological and sociological factors will be used to determine how family diversity, poverty and other adverse childhood experiences can have a major impact on a child’s development and life chances. The policy and professional practice that is in place in the UK will be explored in relation to how practitioners can support children, young people and families. Social inclusion and Early Help intervention will also be examined.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will utilise various methods of teaching and learning to promote and increase student confidence. Debates around the learning and application of knowledge to real life situations using case studies will help to stimulate and embed knowledge. Lectures will look to provide information and promote discussion. The seminars will be more task orientated to further cement learning and increase critical thinking. Group work will be encouraged in semester 2 and Moodle quizzes will be in place throughout the year to check understanding at key points. Problem solving learning will be encouraged. To help students achieve their potential there will also be an emphasis on learning as a collaborative process.Students will be encouraged to shape their own learning and to be reflective.

Further details relating to assessment
A choice of essay titles will be provided as examples that have relevance to the learning that has taken place over semester 1. Students also have the option to create their own essay title. Students will then be given the option of how they present their learning. This could be an academic essay, a brochure for practitioners or a parental guidance leaflet. The aim is to consolidate learning and to practice writing, referencing and research skills.

In semester 2 a group presentation will be required. Mid way through the semester a plan will be submitted covering the students suggested content, group logistics and timings, and adherence to learning outcomes. The group presentation will be at the end of the semester and will cover how policy affects children, young people and families and the practitioners they encounter. Topics considered will be support, inclusion and safeguarding.
