BMM6682 - Leadership in Projects

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Evaluate and compare the impact of various leadership traits, attributes, and skills on project teams, considering their effectiveness in achieving project goals and fostering team collaboration
2 - Assess and critique the applicability and effectiveness of current leadership theories, models, and principles within diverse organizational project contexts, considering factors such as project scope, team dynamics, and organizational culture
3 - Formulate an approach to develop leadership skills in various project situations
4 - Engage in critical self-reflection on personal leadership approaches and their impact on team members.

Content:

This module provides an opportunity to explore the development of practical leadership skills at a tactical level, tailored to meet the demands of today's rapidly evolving work environment. Apprentices will engage in an in-depth examination of the attributes and competencies essential for effective leadership, alongside the application of various leadership theories and models in project-specific contexts. The module aims to enhance apprentices' capacity to inspire and motivate individuals, thereby maximising team contributions within project management settings. Drawing from a diverse array of established principles and recent advancements in management and leadership practices, apprentices will be equipped to assume leadership roles in contemporary complex project environments. Through a critical appraisal of conventional and contemporary leadership paradigms, apprentices will gain insights into evolving notions of leadership, emphasising its relevance in professional practice.

- Concept of transformational leadership and change, leaders and communication, concepts and theories of leadership and leadership roles within high performance organisations.
- Historical concepts of leadership, leadership and competitive advantage initiatives.
- Emotional intelligence and intuition, group-based approaches to leadership, leadership and culture, relationships between power and change.
- Ethical dimensions of leadership, the dangerous, dysfunctional and devious side of leadership, change management and its effects and impact.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered in 2-day teaching block. Lectures will deliver core theoretical frameworks, followed by tutorials and personal exercises for reflection and development. Tutorials will be designed to support learners to be self-directed in additional research and with particular emphasis on research within their own employing organisation.

The module will present students with selected scenarios for basic analysis in order to develop both analytical competence and the ability to identify and apply appropriate techniques in a range of typical situations.

The module will make use of case studies and developing business trends and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary. Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/ exercises to support their progress through the module material.

Report:
In this report, apprentices will reflect on their understanding and application of leadership theories and principles learned during the module. They will critically evaluate leadership traits, skills, and behaviours, identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement. Apprentices will analyse personal leadership approaches and their impact on team dynamics and project outcomes. The report should include insights gained from module activities, discussions, and self-reflection exercises. Additionally, apprentices will develop a personal action plan outlining strategies for further leadership development based on their self-assessment.

Students will be offered formative feedback throughout the module in order to help them to achieve successful coverage of the apprenticeship standard’s KSBs in conjunction with the modules aims and outcomes. This will be done via formal sessions and also via online interactions on the Moodle platform and the use of tools such as email and Microsoft Teams.
