8 - Create a professional portfolio which will contain naturally occurring evidence from the apprentice’s day to day activities in the workplace that demonstrate competence in each of the relevant KSBs.

Content:

On completion of this module, apprentices will have the appropriate skills and capabilities to design and conduct an applied work-based research project. The work-based project must evidence the apprentice’s attainment of knowledge, skills and behaviours of a project manager and demonstrate how these have been applied in a project environment. The work-based project report is an account of a project with which the apprentice has been involved and must include a critical appraisal of the project together with a critical review of their achievement in the relevant KSB areas of the standard.

The work-based project is one that represents the appropriate skills, knowledge and behaviours in the standard. It provides a substantive evidence base from a work-related project to demonstrate the application of relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours.

This module will integrate participants’ knowledge and understanding to create a work-based project that potentially generates new knowledge and/or develops their conception of previous topics studied. As project management is pan-sector, there are a wide range of contexts in which the project management KSBs can be demonstrated. Such project management scenarios could include: the implementation of a business change; the implementation of an off-site construction project; the analysis and implementation of a stock control system. It must draw on appropriate references from academic and professional sources.

Participants will have sessions focusing on:
- Research design, aims and hypotheses.
- Reviewing and finalising the research plan.
- Ethical considerations.
- Methodology.
- Analysis of data gathered.
- Presenting/writing up the results.

The module will facilitate the apprentices to compile the portfolio of evidence that will be submitted two weeks prior to the professional review. Assistance will be given to ensure that the most appropriate pieces of apprentice work-based activity are utilised, certifying that it contains a minimum of one and a maximum of three pieces of evidence for each of the relevant KSBs.

This module will also potentially enable the apprentices to cover the UN sustainability goals dependant on the topic chosen for the project:

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Written Report:
The aim of this work-based learning project report is to apply the knowledge gained from the entire Project Manager Degree Apprenticeship program. Participants will collaborate with their managers to identify and address a current issue facing their organization and provide, where possible, an innovative and workable solution. The work-based project report assesses the apprentice’s ability to apply project management principles, methodologies, and techniques to a real-world project within their workplace. This component evaluates the apprentice’s capacity to critically analyse and reflect on their project, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the complexities and challenges encountered.

Throughout the project lifecycle, you will generate project evidence, such as project documentation and reflective logs, which demonstrate the level of attainment expected of a professional project manager. This evidence forms the basis of your report (4,000 words), in which you will conduct a critical appraisal and reflection on your project. Your report should clearly identify lessons learned, which you will evaluate in comparison with contemporary project management research.

The program team will work with you to ensure that a suitable project is undertaken. The module lead will provide general guidelines on planning and implementing the report, including the planning and scheduling of work, methods of investigation, data collection, and preparation of the written report.

Presentation:
The presentation will typically comprise 10 slides (+/- 1 slide) to enable apprentices to demonstrate achievement of the apprenticeship knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is supported by a professional portfolio of evidence that has naturally occurred throughout the apprenticeship programme. The portfolio must contain a minimum of one and a maximum of three pieces of evidence for each of the relevant KSBs. Examples of such evidence may include project schedules, risk assessments, governance documents and change requests. The portfolio must be presented and structured to a professional standard. The documentation for the Professional Review (evidence portfolio and presentation aids) will typically be held electronically in the learning management system of the HEI.

Please note that both components of assessment must be passed to pass the module, in accordance with the Apprenticeship Standard Assessment Plan.

Students will be offered formative feedback throughout the module to help them to achieve successful coverage of the apprenticeship standard’s KSBs in conjunction with the modules aims and outcomes. This will be done via formal sessions, via online interactions on the Moodle platform and the use of tools such as email and Microsoft Teams.

The following grading criteria will inform calculation of the apprenticeship award:

Assessment Method 1: Work Based Project
(3 KSB elements – KA2, SA2, BA2)

Any element failed = Fail, reassessment required in line with regulations
All 3 elements at pass or above = Pass
At least 2 elements at distinction = Distinction.

Assessment Method 2: Professional Review
(4 KSB elements – KA1, SA2, SA3, BA1)

Any element failed = Fail, reassessment required in line with regulations
All 4 elements at pass or above = Pass
