BMM6442 - Research Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Explore, analyse and evaluate in-depth a specific business, international business, management, marketing, finance, or economics related issue linked to their programme of study.
Devise and action an appropriate research project.
Practise self-management and independent learning in the investigative process.
Produce a clear and coherent investigative report based on the research undertaken.

Content:

The taught and theoretical part of this module, as well as its applied part, will cover key topics in social science research, including problem definition (refining the research proposal and research aims and objectives), conducting literature review or systematic literature review, methodology (refining research design and methods, the code of research conduct and ethics, theoretical and systematic review, primary and/or secondary data collection and analysis. Students will study and practise writing a research report, key issues focusing on format, presentation of findings and discussion including academic conventions within the subject specialism.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is designed to support self-directed learning through enquiry and research. Workshops will be organised to monitor and offer guidance to students at intervals throughout the research process in the selected specialist areas: Marketing, Management, Business, Accounting/Finance, Economics and International Business. However, individual tutorials with the module coordinator and supervisor will be encouraged.

Supervisors will be allocated to offer more specialist help in conducting the investigation and verifying the progress of students' research and to offer guidance on data analysis and presentation. The module encourages deep learning through the critical analysis of relevant literature and, when appropriate, to follow the investigative research process (including ethics process) of primary research.

Research project report: Students wishing to undertake an element of primary research are required to get the support of a member of business research team of Leeds Trinity University who will act as a supervisor. In addition, this student should follow the Code of Research Conduct and Ethics for undergraduate research projects of this institution to affirm that appropriate ethical safeguards are in place prior to undertaking the research. During this module, students should apply and obtain an ethical approval before starting their data collection.

The ethical approval process is coordinated by a module leader and requires the signing-off of an ethical approval form before any project can be actioned. The process follows key principles of Leeds Trinity University's Code of Research Conduct and Ethics, available on the University intranet.

Students undertaking non-primary research will be allocated a supervisor by the module leader. No ethical application will be required.
