BMM6153 - Contemporary Issues in Sustainability

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Sustainability is a trending and major issue in contemporary business operations. However, not all business owners/managers have a deep understanding of the specific aspects of sustainability that affect their operations. Also, they rarely have the requisite skills, tools and techniques of sustainability assessment, nor do they really understand the significance of sustainability practices on their operational performance. This module will expose students to sustainability in general and the various sustainability issues and practices relevant to business operations.

The module will include the following:

- Introduction to sustainability and review of sustainability pillars

- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

- Benefits and challenges of adopting sustainable practices in business operations (manufacturing and service operations)

- The role of stakeholders in sustainable practices

- Sustainability indicators, indices and other considerations in the measurement

- Other issues in sustainability:
Corporate social responsibility, the supply chain, production and circular economy
Health, gender, social exclusion, food systems
Environmental issues such as water, plastics, pollution
Social issues in sustainability
Governmental policies and approaches

- Sustainability Frameworks
