BMM5613 - Legal, Ethical and Professional Issues within Project Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Critically reflect on individual, social and business ethics
2 - Explain the legal frameworks and governance frameworks within which projects operate
3 - Critically assess the legal and ethical issues that impact upon projects and their governance
4 - Demonstrate an ability to identify and use legal materials, including some primary sources
5 - Critically analyse the professional issues relating to modern project managers
6 - Self-reflect on own ability to make ethical decisions in relation to projects and project teams.

Content:

This module is designed to develop apprentices’ understanding of the ethical, professional and legal issues relating to project management. It provides insight into the operating constraints and human issues involved in projects, especially within complex, global organisational contexts. Apprentices will explore ideas around project management as a professional discipline with a focus on issues of integrity, ethics and trust relating to professional conduct. They will also specifically examine legal issues relating to procurement such as contract law as well as health and safety as both a legal duty and a moral obligation.

Communicate and issue project-related reports and statements in an objective and truthful manner. Maintain professional conduct so as to enhance the honour, reputation, and usefulness of project management as a professional discipline.

B5 Inclusive: Be open, approachable and authentic and able to build and maintain trust with others. Actively seek the views of others and value diversity internally and externally.

B6 Innovation and Resourcefulness: Understand the bigger picture and work enthusiastically and creatively to analyse problems and develop innovative and workable solutions to problems. Have a solution focus, not a problem focus and to be positive and adaptable, responding well to feedback and the need for change.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered via a 3-day teaching block, comprising whole-group interactive lecture and seminar covering fundamental theories and applications. Lectures and seminars will be supported by in-depth applied workshops.

Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading for independent learning in advance on the VLE and in the module handbook. The module will use book exercises, case studies and scholarly papers according to the topic and learning objective.

Professional Debate:
Apprentices are required to engage in a professional debate on a given statement within which they consider and critically compare arguments for and against the view given in the statement. This should be based on the research around elements such as: the ethics of different stakeholder groups, legal and ethical issues which affect projects, professional issues which affect Project Managers, project governance frameworks, influence of law upon governance, and how governance handle ethical concerns etc.
