BMM4692 - Methods and Principles of Project Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Define the key features of a project, and the function of project management
2 - Explore various project management philosophies/methodologies against types of projects. Identify project lifecycles stages and appreciate the need for reviews at various stages
3 - Apply and evaluate performance in governance and change control procedures for managing projects
4 - Explore various processes and procedures to plan, manage and control project scope, requirements, risk identification and management, procurement strategy and contract award
5 - Examine the role and characteristics of stakeholders and approaches to stakeholder and communications management.

Content:

Module Abstract

This module introduces you to the function project management plays in the world by 'getting things done'. You will discover the principles of project management along with the variety of approaches required to initiate and execute projects. Various contexts are explored to identify differences in the application of project management between industries; public, private and third sectors. You will examine the stages of project lifecycles as well as investigate who stakeholders are, how they can be managed.

- Project management principles, project methodologies (e.g., Waterfall, generic, agile, iterative)
- The context of projects, project sponsorship, project office
- Estimating, project success and benefits management, stakeholder management, critical path analysis, scope management, change control
- Risk management, requirements management, planning, project life cycles, project reviews, organizational roles, methods and procedures, governance of projects
- Information management, conflict management, project regulatory environment.

S8.1 Evaluate requirements and methods for data capture and analysis in a project environment. Evaluate project schedule integrity including identification and resolution of scheduling problems.

S8.2 Apply resource acquisition and management techniques to balance programme and project needs against resource demand. Negotiate the allocation and scheduling of internal and external resources to meet programme and project demands.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered in 2-day teaching block. Lectures will deliver core theoretical frameworks with practical content, context and processes to achieve the themes outlined in the learning outcomes, followed by workshops and personal exercises for reflection and development.

In addition to 2-day teaching block, there will be an additional 1-day workshop at the end of semester 2 for both Methods and Principles, and Tools and Techniques modules to prepare apprentices for Level D PMQ qualification exam.

The module will make use of current newsworthy case studies and developing business trends and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary. Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/ exercises to support their progress through the module material. Students will also be directed to broad electronic source including e-books, journals, and other web-based sources to support their learning. Teamwork will be used to enhance project leading and working together skills. The group will work on analysing case-studies, problem-solving and group discussions. Time will be allocated for independent learning.

Students would be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Essay: Apprentices are required to write an essay explaining the difference between projects and business as usual with the help of examples, distinguish between various PM methodologies, explain APM project lifecycle stages and the role stakeholders play in project management.

Written Exam: Apprentices are required to undertake a closed-book exam in which they will answer questions covering learning outcomes 1 to 5 in 1hr 15 mins allowed time. There will be two seen and one unseen question. This assessment will be done individually and in exam conditions.
