SHN6372 - Injury Treatment Modalities 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Discuss the therapeutic impact and effectiveness of injury treatment modalities
Critically evaluate the evidence base for therapeutic modalities
Practically demonstrate and appropriately record the application of therapeutic modalities in a safe and effective manner
Demonstrate an appreciation of the contraindications for the application of therapeutic techniques

Content:

This module will help students develop a critical understanding of a variety of injury treatment modalities. Building on the knowledge developed in SHN5292 Injury Treatment Modalities 1, students will examine a range of advanced therapeutic modalities. These will typically include: Ultrasound and Diathermy, Inferential, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Massage and Manual Therapies. In each case the students will be guided through the principles of usage, theory and evidence base, therapeutic effects and contraindications. In addition this module will allow students to consider the use of these modalities in an exploration of a selection of case studies.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will provide the theoretical basis for a range of topics. Practical session will afford time for student presentations, formative assessment and assorted learning tasks. Practical sessions will also give students the opportunity to gain valuable skills and demonstrate competency in the use of the various modalities.

In order to obtain a pass in the practical, safe and effective practice must be observed; details on this are outlined in the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation NP3.

Formative Assessment: This will be integrated into practical sessions using a combination of questioning techniques and peer assessment
