Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify and evaluate the need, and methods, to monitor athletes' and their training load (physiological, psychological, and emotional).
Critique the role of integrating a multidisciplinary sport and exercise science and medicine team into high performance coaching.
Examine the use of scientific data to inform coaching practice.
Construct and justify a macrocycle based on scientific principles of training with consideration of both short and long term objectives.

Content:

This module will explore the specific demands, and their implications, of performance athletes and how a sports coach can monitor these demands. There will be specific focus on the psychosocial demands of being an athlete, the monitoring of training load and the monitoring of readiness to train.

The module will then move on to develop suitable training programmes for performance athletes integrating relevant coaching principles relating to the structuring of coaching sessions, and optimised based on scientific data.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Theoretical concepts are introduced in workshops. Workshops contain interactive tasks with a focus on case studies and problem-based learning. Workshops also support learning through discussion, supported further with online forums, quizzes and reading activities. Panopto videos will emphasise core areas of the module curriculum.
