SHN6252 - Advanced Nutrition for Sport and Exercise

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the substrate utilisation during exercise of varying lengths.
Analyse and evaluate dietary intake and nutritional requirements for exercise in the general population and sub groups of the population.
Evaluate the role of a range of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements designed for the sports market for the metabolic effects and efficacy, health, safety and legal aspects.
Plan diet regimes and give well-informed dietary advice to individuals and groups of participants in a wide range of sport for exercise, training and competition.

Content:

Energy systems and substrate utilisation: aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Carbohydrate loading. Food supplements and ergogenic aids in aiding exercise performance. Fluid balance and sports drinks for optimum sports performance. Nutritional beliefs and attitudes of exercises and sports performers. Advanced dietary analysis. Dietary management and meal planning for participants across different sports.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module uses lead lectures to introduce theoretical content. Seminar sessions are used to support theoretical understanding.

Online support is used throughout in the form of forums, reading and quizzes.

Coursework requires completion of a number of written tasks which demonstrate the learners' understanding of substrate metabolism, dietary analysis, and the rationale for nutritional supplementation.
