SHN6173 - Applied Performance Testing

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

In this module you will study how to collect, interpret, and utilise performance testing data. This will include but not exclusive: advanced motion analysis to look at segment motion patterns and their interaction in terms of segmental sequencing; electromyography and its application in sport; force and pressure measurement in sport and movement; maximal strength tests; and both aerobic and aerobic capacity tests. You will also study the design of testing programmes and scientific rigour, including the analysis of data and its interpretation applied to specific sports. In addition, you will also study the professional boundaries of practice as both an individual and as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will undertake applied work with various sports science disciplines including strength and conditioning and sports nutrition.

Further details relating to assessment
You will work within multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary groups to support an athlete of your choice. You will design a small-scale research project to determine how best to support your chosen athlete. The two assessments are linked, and therefore once a data collection method on performance testing has been selected, you will be assessed on your laboratory-based skills of data collection for your first assessment component. You will then present your small-scale research project as a poster presentation for your final module assessment.
