SHN5282 - Principles of Exercise Rehabilitation 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate practical competencies in the instruction of exercise rehabilitation techniques.
Examine the components of a comprehensive rehabilitation programme specific to the athletes' needs with reference to phases of prehabilitation and rehabilitation.
Identify techniques for monitoring the safe and effective application of a rehabilitation programme

Content:

This module enables the student to apply the knowledge and skills from Level 4 in an applied rehabilitation context. The student will learn a range of therapeutic exercises as the foundation of sports rehabilitation. These will include therapeutic exercises for both the upper and lower body extremities as well as all regions of the spine and the head. Students will examine the specific stages of return to sport from injury comprising rehabilitation and prehabilitation specific to an individual athlete. Monitoring practices will be introduced with consideration of evaluating progress and preventing further injury.

Students will demonstrate treatment procedures within the practical sessions. Students will have to demonstrate techniques which are appropriate, safe, and effective and following the guidance of appropriate professional bodies and the current evidence base when identifying best practice approaches. Practical sessions will consider treatment principles as well as professional conduct.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshops will introduce the theoretical underpinnings of therapeutic practice and these will be built on in practical session focussing on the demonstration and practice of therapeutic exercises.

In order to obtain a pass in the practical, safe and effective practice must be observed; details on this are outlined in the BSc (Hons) Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation NP3 document.

Coursework: Case study proposal of rehabilitation programme. Students will be presented with a hypothetical scenario and be required to provide a suitable rehabilitation plan.

Formative Assessment: This will be integrated into practical sessions using a combination of questioning techniques and peer assessment of therapeutic exercise techniques.

Assessment:

001 Practical; 10mins; end of semester 2 40%
