SHN5272 - Strength and Conditioning in Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify the specific requirements of sporting activities.
Demonstrate awareness of methods of performance testing related to sporting activities.
Construct an appropriate strength and conditioning programme based on appropriate training principles and models.
Demonstrate awareness of methods of sport specific conditioning.

Content:

Athlete assessment; Understanding the demands of sports; Principles of training; Periodization; Recovery strategies; Monitoring and evaluation; Communicating with the athlete and coaches; Training programme design; Specific training methods for strength, power, speed, endurance, muscle mass, and flexibility; Sport specific conditioning.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Interactive lectures will cover a range of the theoretical aspects related to this module. Workshops will afford the opportunity for students to lead the discussion of appropriate topics and prepare them for the assessment presentation. Practical sessions will be integral in relation to the technical aspects of strength and conditioning.

Presentation This piece of assessment has a primary focus on the specific needs of a variety of sports as well as a consideration of testing methods used by the strength and conditioning coach. This understanding facilitates appropriate training prescription.

Coursework This piece of assessment has a primary focus on the construction of a sport specific training programme with consideration of the different phases of the training cycle. Additionally, students are challenged to provide a rationale based on research evidence.

BASRaT does not allow the condonement of any module as part of an accredited programme. To maintain a standardised experience and knowledge of a GSR, Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) is not permitted against BASRaT course modules, unless from an alternative accredited BASRaT course programme. Students must maintain an attendance level above 80% through the completion of their course to be eligible for graduate membership with BASRaT. BASRaT also recommends that the staff:student ratio does not exceed 1:16, and requires that this ratio does not exceed 1:20 in practical sessions.
