SHN5202 - Coaching and Assessment of Performance

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of an interdisciplinary method for an assessment of a sporting performance.
Evaluate requirements of a sports performance using an interdisciplinary approach to identify a suitable intervention to improve performance.
Plan, deliver and evaluate a coaching session to improve the sporting performance for a selected athlete.
Critically evaluate and reflect on different practice methods and coaching styles.

Content:

A multidisciplinary approach to assessing the requirements of a sport and the needs of an athlete, from a psychological, physiological and biomechanical standpoint and implementing a range of coaching theories to improve the athlete's weaknesses.

Knowledge of the measurement concepts and limitations; validity, reliability and sensitivity of measurement and the ethical considerations for assessing a sport performance. Types of practice and theories concerning the transfer of learning to different situations and the relationship between performance and learning in sport. Understanding the models and theories of sport coaching and conceptual frameworks in planning and conducting a series of coaching sessions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will take an indisciplinary approach to coaching and assessment of performance. The module will be taught across two components, with the emphasis been placed on how to assess a sports performance from a sport science persceptive during the first component and then implementing strategies to improve these weaknesses through a variety coaching methods that will be covered during component 2.

Sport Science Component - Weeks 1 to 5
These 5 weeks will consist of lectures that comprise traditional lectures, matrix styles lecture delivery and online tutorials. The main content will be delivered during lectures with workshops allowing students time to develop their knowledge and apply the information that has been gathered to assess their client.

Coaching Component - Weeks 6 to 10
These 5 weeks will consist of lectures that will consist of providing the key coaching theories and the relevant supporting science in the development of these theories. The following workshops will then provide the students the opportunity to implement these theories into planning, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions with time to reflect on the process following each workshop.

Further details relating to assessment:

Group Presentation of an Infographic - Group presentation (3 students per group) of the correct physiology, psychology and biomechanics approaches taken for analysing a client in a given sport. Present the results of the evaluation and interpretations with clear intervention strategies proposed that are underpinned with correct theories. Presentations should take the form of infographic. Presentations will also be subjective to peer assessment.

Case Study - Students will be required to explain and justify the approach that they took in the development of the session and provide a clear rationale for these approaches and how these will allow the weaknesses to be addressed. Students will be required to reflect on their delivered session and identify aspects that went well and aspects that need to be modified if the session was repeated. The session plan of the delivered session will be required in the appendix of the case study
