SHN5125 - Strength and Conditioning in Action

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will explore sport specific planning and preparation for athletes across a range of activities and sports. Utilising a life course approach, students will investigate the specific needs of sports using a multidisciplinary approach. This will in turn inform their understanding of training programme design and evaluation. Other topics will include coaching philosophies and coaching practice. Practical activities will enable students to develop coaching skills and proficiency in techniques for strength and conditioning.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio will give students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge across a range of topics including coaching philosophies, needs analysis, athlete assessment, age specific considerations, periodization, monitoring and evaluation, communicating with the athlete and coaches, training programme design. There will also be an opportunity for students to reflect on feedback from practical activities.

Formative feedback will be provided at the mid semester and end semester point. In addition, learning activities during the module also provide opportunity for formative feedback to support the summative assessments.

The intention is that this module contributes to the mapping of CIMSPA standards for S&C Trainer which is being sought as part of the S&C programme.
