SHN5102 - Nutritional Biochemistry

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of body composition, energy balance and metabolic rate.
Explain inter-relationships between selected micronutrients at the cellular level.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationship between micronutrients, exercise and health.
Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology of disease.
Evaluate the role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention of disease.

Content:

Body composition; work and energy; energy requirements and energy intake. B group vitamins and their role in energy transfer and exercise. Metabolism of iron and calcium in human health. Antioxidants in free radical-induced disease development. Food consumption trends in the UK, nutritional consequences of dietary trends. Socio-economic differences in food consumption. Risk factors and aetiology of nutrition-related diseases are studied as is the prevention of nutrition-related health problems through diet and exercise.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will be supported with seminars/workshops to facilitate understanding of how healthy eating and physical activity can act in synergy in the prevention and treatment of nutrition-related diseases.
