SHN4143 - Professional Skills in Sport, Exercise and Health

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will contain some core content for all students (approx. 30 hours) and some programme-specific content (approx. 20 hours).

This module will give you experience and understanding of the requirements of working within the applied Sport, Exercise and Health sector. This will include: an awareness of the sector and typical clients/stakeholders/roles and responsibilities; employment opportunities within the sector; an appreciation of practice in and reflection on undertaking the participant consultation process; understanding the challenges and benefits of working as part of an interdisciplinary team, working empathetically, ethically and with compassion. It will also facilitate you contextualising this information and skills within your focus of study (Programme-specific content).

This module also incorporates the Professional Development Block: employer challenges and optional Level 4 placement.

For Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation students programme specific content (approximately 20 hours) will include working towards a first aid qualification to support future placements. This will be in the form of practical workshops.

Further details relating to assessment
The focus of this module is on practical professional skills for employment. As such, Assessment 1 will focus on the demonstration of professional communication skills and an application of equality, diversity and inclusion principles – this will be done by a simulated consultation with a peer-participant in the context of the programme of study, recorded and reflected upon. During the weeks preceding this assessment, students will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on in-class exercises designed to develop these skills.

Assessment 2 will enable students to build a portfolio of evidence relating to what is required for employment in their chosen programme-related careers. This will include (as examples only): reflections on their personal skill development, overview of career opportunities in the sector, use of digital technology in the context of their programmes, demonstration of awareness of individual and group differences. A formative assessment will be provided in Semester 2 week 7 of teaching to allow feedback on portfolio progress. This will include the tasks associated with the professional challenge/placement.

Within the portfolio, and as part of the requirements of the Society of Sports Therapists, this module will include a First Aid course, culminating in a 30-minute practical exam at the end of Semester 2 to consolidate the first aid elements of the module. The exam element is worth 50% of the overall portfolio mark, with full marks awarded for a pass and a mark of zero awarded for a fail. The exam must be passed in order to pass the module overall, as students must be able to demonstrate safe and effective practice.

The integrated assessment will require students to present reflections on ways in which content from the programme has helped them understand the diverse needs of participants (relevant to their pathway) and how an interdisciplinary approach to supporting participants is ethically and practically beneficial.

For Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation students, this integrated assessment must include reflections on the first aid training undertaken, as well as other areas of their Level 4 study, and contributes to 50% of the overall portfolio mark.

This module will culminate in a two-week Professional Challenge Project or a two-week work placement. Students will have the chance to opt which path they want to take during the course of the module. Guidance regarding the options will be included in the Module Handbook and supported by briefings at the beginning of Semester 2.

A pass in the Professional Challenge Project will be achieved through participation in key tasks throughout the project. A pass in the work placement will be based on employer feedback. During the Professional Challenge Project or Placement, students will complete a Reflective Statement outlining their learning from the project /placement.

The intention is that this module contributes to the mapping of CIMSPA standards for S&C Trainer which is being sought as part of the S&C programme.

PSRB requirements mean some portfolio components will need to be passed. For example:
BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation: Assessment 002 will include First Aid Practical assessment which must be passed.
Component 003 Professional Challenge Project or Work Placement will need to be passed by all students in line with University regulations.
