POL6002 - Advanced Professional Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to (in respect of their chosen specialism (response, community or investigation)):
Identify: the wider context in which the police operate, emerging issues and strategic drivers which impact on their specialism;
identify specific challenges and/ or complexities with their specialism and how this effects them in their role;
describe the skills and behaviours to be effective in their specialist role;
recognise how communication strategies are used in policing and the part that both the media and social media has within those;
be able to apply reflective practice to their chosen area to inform their future practice.

Content:

Students will have chosen their police specialism at this stage and so will have opportunity to attend teaching around either response policing, community policing or investigative policing.

Response Policing:
In this pathway students will learn about specific challenges faced by response officers in more complex response situations and contexts; key social, political and strategic drivers impacting upon contemporary response policing; and strategies for how those involved in response policing can remain effective in an increasingly challenging environment.

Community Policing:
In this pathway students will learn about a range of problem-solving approaches that can be applied to reduce community tension and promote community cohesion; key emerging issues, problems or concerns faced by the community; and the impact of potential challenges to community policing and the future role of the community constable.

Investigative Policing:
In this pathway students will learn the knowledge and skills required to conduct complex investigations; the intricacies associated with victim and witness care during a complex investigation; professional considerations relevant to specific complex investigations; complex victim/ witness and suspect interviewing; liaising with specialists in relation to complex live (or cold) cases; and how to ensure the well-being and resilience of the investigative team and self during a complex investigation.

In addition, all students will learn the principles and processes of an effective communication strategy and how to use social media as a means of informing and engaging with the community and promoting policing initiatives.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will have chosen their career specialism at this point and so will attend the teaching sessions relevant to that. In respect of the Investigative Policing specialism, West Yorkshire Police staff will take responsibility for their learning as this forms part of the PIP2 accreditation. Community Policing specialists and Response Policing specialist will attend workshops/ lectures/ small groups sessions around their learning objectives.

All students will attend the sessions relating to communication and the use of media outlets in policing.

Further details relating to assessment
For students who specialise in response or community policing, they are required to submit a 4000-word reflective assignment with supporting witness testimony. They will be asked to consider their operational practice and use examples of learning in the workplace. They can append any witness testimony or primary evidence that supports their learning. The written piece should then incorporate academic theory to demonstrate an understanding of how theory translates to practice, and vice versa.

For those students who have chosen to specialise in investigations, they are required to demonstrate competency in interviewing (which forms part of the PIP2 qualification and so will be assessed by West Yorkshire Police staff) and a shortened reflective assignment of 2000 words, with the same criteria as above. The PIP 2 qualification is a PSRB requirement.
