PED6444 - Enhanced Enquiry Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate conceptual understanding that supports critical evaluation of current research in education, critiques of methodologies and the proposal of hypotheses;
Demonstrate the ability to devise, plan and structure a setting-based enquiry project, having regard to principles of good research and project design and to ethics;
Demonstrate the ability to collect and analyse information to arrive at conclusions on the basis of systematic and sustained critical reflection;
Demonstrate an ability to apply their findings where appropriate in a professional context, including that of leadership.

Content:

This module will enhance study completed in PED5472 Introducing Practitioner Enquiry. In this module, students will independently carry out a small-scale research project and record their findings appropriately. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of ethical issues, carrying out literature reviews, planning and conducting research, analysing evidence and drawing conclusions. Students will also critically evaluate the role of research in developing personal and professional practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will take part in lectures where they will be given key information regarding their proposal, literature review and research report, including ethics and differing research methods. They will also be given support in smaller groups and by individual tutors in order to carry out and record their research effectively.

Further details relating to assessment
Component one will include ethical approval for empirical research as appropriate. If ethical approval is not awarded, students will only be permitted to undertake a non-empirical research project.

*Component one does not need to be passed for the module overall.

*Component two and three must both be passed for the module to be passed overall.
