PED5712 - Developing the Early Years Curriculum (3-7) 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Evaluate current developments across the relevant subjects and factors linked to these, related to how pupils learn;
Compare and contrast a range of pedagogical approaches used to develop children's learning in the subject areas studied;
Evaluate experiential teaching and learning strategies in planning for and teaching early mathematics; explore links between reading and developing writing through a unit of work;
Demonstrate and promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English.

Content:

In this module, there is deeper coverage of the knowledge and understanding of the core curriculum areas acquired in Level 4 and the module will be developed further.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of how experiential learning theories can impact on children's conceptual understanding. Students will be introduced to and analyse the importance of real and relevant contexts for learning.

In mathematics, students will focus on mathematics in the EYFS curriculum and National Curriculum with an emphasis on the concepts of shape, space and measure. Children's enquiry-based learning within the curriculum, both indoor and outdoor, will be evaluated and the role of the adult in promoting effective interactions and empowering children as learners will be explored.

In English, students will build on their knowledge and understanding of developing children's reading and writing skills. They will consider the stages involved in teaching writing, plan for a unit of work and consider how to create rich and varied stimuli for writing opportunities.

In science, students will develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of effective science pedagogy in the 3-7 age phase. They will recognise and develop the needs for developing a STEM literate society through engaging with school in school.

In computing, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the effective pedagogies and resources that support the development of the concepts and approaches behind computational thinking and computer science. They will explore a range of practical activities that support the strands of the computing curriculum.

In PE, students will deepen their understanding of the development of motor skills in children (both fine motor skills and gross motor skills). They will explore a range of practical activities that focus on a variety of strands of the PE Curriculum.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is taught through a variety of lectures, tutorials, practical and engaging workshops and directed tasks.

3. Response to a journal article in one subject area (2,000 words).
The presentation will be formatively and peer assessed mid-semester.

This module will develop students' knowledge and understanding of subject, pedagogical and curriculum approaches needed to provide evidence towards the following Teachers' Standards (DfE, 2012):
2. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
4. Plan and teach well-structured lessons
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
6. Make accurate and productive use of assessment
