JOU5005 - Journalism in Context

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module builds on the theoretical elements of the Level 4 module by developing dimensions of academic or theoretical thinking around journalism practice and encouraging students to use such techniques to frame understanding of power and influence connected to global journalistic coverage of current affairs and their own future journalistic practice. Academic skills will be developed further, with critical thinking and analysis a key element of the module.

Further details relating to assessment
Presentation: this tests presentation skills, critical analysis skills and referencing.

Portfolio: students must identify a theory of specific interest and produce a thematic project applying the theory to demonstrate how it can be used to make sense of exampled journalistic practice. Case studies of two or three current events in the news must be exampled and critical analysis of journalistic practice via the application of a theoretical framework must be demonstrated. The work must be presented as a rounded and coherent project which identifies potential research project development (which could be applied to the Level 6 research project).

Early Assessment: there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.

001 Presentation; 5 minute equivalent; mid semester 2 50%
002 Portfolio; 2,000-word equivalent; end of semester 2 50%
