ENG4533 - Shakespeare and Shakespearean Drama

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Students will study drama of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They may find themselves in places as far apart as Judaea, Venice, Australia, or a lost island in the Mediterranean. Topics will range from intimate relationships to the political stage. Audio-visual material will be included as appropriate. Consideration of gender, nationalities and race will be key issues. Students will gain insight into the richness and variety of the texts produced in this period, its cultural conditions and its relevance today. Students will study critical essays, learning the techniques of critical scholarship and discussion which students can apply in their own work.

Further details relating to assessment
Presentation: this will be an individual presentation on two of the plays covered in Semester 1.

Essay: the 3,000-word essay will be a sustained essay on three plays; one may be from Semester 1 but at least two should be from Semester 2. Reference to the other plays should be made wherever possible.

Integrated Assessment: this will comprise an assignment you will undertake with the rest of the programme cohort in the summer after Semester 2 and will be programme level assessment. The assignment will contribute to the overall mark for a number of modules. Integrated Assessment will be formulated according to English Literature LOs, a single project for whole cohort.

Classes will be devoted within the first 4 weeks in each semester to peer and tutor review of draft presentations and essays, which will constitute formative assessment and assessment unpacking.
