CYP6002 - Critical Issues and Contemporary Debates

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate contemporary views and theories of early childhood and education in the context of ideal conditions for learning;
Demonstrate a critical awareness of current initiatives and research in early childhood educational practice;
Demonstrate an ability to analyse critically, synthesise and evaluate data and research, constructing an informed argument and presenting their findings appropriately.

Content:

This module offers students the opportunity to develop further critical reasoning and analytical skills in relation to philosophical, sociological and psychological concepts of early childhood and education.

The module will include a study of:
- Foundational and contemporary views and theories of early childhood, education and teaching;
- The rethinking of early childhood and educational policies and practices;
- Practical ethics: issues and dilemmas.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place via lectures and in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions. Students will be encouraged to take part in a range of debates and discussion, which will contribute to formative peer, group and self-assessment.
