CYP4015 - Safeguarding and Child Protection

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will explore the complex issue of safeguarding and protecting children. It will consider current legislation and policy initiatives relevant to this area of study along with relevant current research findings. Students will be expected to engage with current procedures and understand the frameworks within which all practitioners are expected to operate. Specific reference will be made to the safeguarding and welfare requirements of the current statutory frameworks. Students will learn the different categories of abuse and will develop the expertise outlined in current policies and legislation. Ethics, social justice and cultural differences will be a theme running through this study.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Formal scheduled teaching and learning activities. This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and groupwork/tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions.

Guided independent study
Students will be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

Further details relating to assessment
The group poster presentation gives students the opportunity to work in small groups and increase confidence and skills in discussions. It also allows students to demonstrate depth of knowledge concerning safeguarding policy with a creative approach.

The Integrated Assessment for BA (Hons) Working with Children, Young People and Families can be negotiated and may include one of the following: Professional Case Conference, short video or documentary, portfolio exhibition, use of media with accompanying narrative / blog. For programmes where Integrated Assessment does not apply for this module, there will be appropriate alternative and similar assessment.

The Module Handbook will reflect changing policies and legislation. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions. Early assessment guidance will be included in the Module Handbook and be provided early in the semester to help unpack the details of the first assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation in line with the University grading system.
