Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Appraise the range of ways in which our physical and social environment affects our physical and mental health.
2 Evaluate the effectiveness of health interventions that utilise environmental change in Western society
3 Critically discuss the role of culture and tradition in relation to health related habits and practices
4 Understand the relationship between health interventions that utilise environmental change, sustainability and greening.
5 Critically evaluate research addressing the healthy environment and issues of diversity and disability.

Content:

What we mean by environment. Understanding the role of the social and the built environment in contemporary health. The role of culture in nutrition and health related practices. Interventions that utilise environmental change. International policies and practices that focus on the environment. The link between a healthy environment for individual physical and mental health and a 'green' environment.
