On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise prescription.
Critically discuss the role of exercise/ physical activity for different clinical population groups.
Explain and evaluate appropriate adaptation/modification of exercise/ physical activity for different clinical population groups.
Competently instruct exercise to exercise referral patients in an effective and safe manner.
Undertake a case study.
Comprehensive understanding of the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise prescription; Health and exercise considerations related to special population groups; Risks & benefits of exercise for special populations; Role and responsibilities within an exercise referral scheme; Exercise referral process; Exercise referral schemes; Risk stratification in exercise referral; Design, instruction and evaluation of exercise referral programmes.
The sessions will be organised in mainly 4-hour teaching blocks. Workshops will be used to develop student understanding of the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise prescription and the role of exercise for these populations as well as understand and critically evaluate the Exercise Referral model. Workshops will then focus on the knowledge and understanding needed to design, instruct and evaluate an exercise referral session. Students will then apply this knowledge in the assessed case study and 30 minute assessed practical session.

Any students taking all these assessments as a deferred first opportunity (DFO) or re-sit will be assessed by a 4,000-word portfolio with 100% weighting.
Other relevant matters
- The practical component of the module is taught by REPS accredited staff.
- Sport lab, gym, sports hall and fitness suite are available for the practical / workshop component of the module.
- The practical assessment is 30 minutes per student in relation to REPS accreditation.
- An additional multiple choice exam forms part of the assessment for the module and is not a credit bearing component but is required for the REPS Level 3 accreditation (Exercise Referral). This exam will be offered during the normal assessment period, with any resit of this component being offered alongside subsequent exams for this module. Note that this may be in the following academic year.
- An additional Case Study forms part of the assessment for the module and is not a credit bearing component but is required for the REPS Level 3 accreditation (Exercise Referral). This case study will be offered during the normal assessment period for the module, with any resits of this component being offered alongside subsequent assessments for this module. REPS Level 3 accreditation (exercsie Referral) will be achieved following successful achievement of both the multiple choice exam, completion of the case study and the practical assessment.
