Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of sport in the modern world.
Illustrate the social significance of sport in our globalised world.
Explore how theories can be used to deepen an understanding of sport and its relationship with other spheres of life.
Explain how participants can establish an identity through sport.
Interpret how social theory can enhance our understanding of sport and of its role within the society.

Content:

a) Social theory and sport.
Conflict theory and sport; functionalism and sport; feminism and sport; figurational sociology and sport; alternative social theories.

b) Application of social theories
Case studies and examples on issues related to modern sport: sport and social inclusion; sport and nationalism; commercialisation of sport; elite sport abuses; future of sport.

002 Essay; 2,500 words; End of Semester Two 60%
