SHN5172 - Physiology of Training

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of how the human body responds to different forms of exercise, and be able to apply this knowledge to the practical measurement of physiological variables.
Design, undertake and interpret a variety of exercise physiology protocols in a safe and effective manner using specialized laboratory equipment.
Communicate scientific information in a clear and coherent fashion in the form of written reports, using appropriate scientific language and statistical data analysis.
Develop an increased awareness of scientific research and the research design process (hypothesis generation, data collection, critical interpretation of data and scientific writing).

Content:

This module will examine the physiological responses to different forms of exercise, focusing on the measurement and application of performance based variables (VO2max, blood lactate thresholds, and running economy) in relation to exercise performance. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop key practical skills such as VO2max testing and capillary blood sampling, and learn how physiological variables such a blood lactate can be used to monitor and enhance performance.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will consist of 2-hour weekly lectures, where theoretical concepts and contemporary issues in training are explored. These lectures are completed by 2 practical laboratory/seminar sessions each week, where practical skills to measure exercise performance and fitness are developed.
