On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of methods to enable the technical and tactical analysis of sport.
Demonstrate knowledge of the application of methods of analysis drawing accurate conclusions relevant to the sport coaching process methods.
Outline and evaluate the models for technique analysis in sports skills.
Understand and evaluate the basic principles of notational analysis in performance enhancement.
Conduct a technique analysis of selected sports skills and identify strengths and weaknesses associated with the performance.
Students shall develop knowledge of key performance indicators within sport and identify methods which enable an accurate conclusion to be drawn relevant to the sport coaching process concerning the strengths and weaknesses of sport performers.
Students will gain an understanding of scientific methods of analysing a variety of sports from a technical, tactical, and strategic standpoint. Students will use a range of methods including, but not limited to, notational analysis and software assisted performance analysis. Students will also have the opportunity to use two-dimensional and three-dimensional motion capture technology in the analysis and development of sport performance.
Theoretical content is discussed in lectures before students are presented with guided group study to consolidate the theory. Students then work in a practical lesson to develop the understanding of the application.

Further details relating to assessment
Case study 1: students are expected to perform a detailed analysis of a sport skill. The project requires the use of appropriate technical resources and provision of a detailed evaluation of the skill.
Case study 2: students are expected to complete a notational analysis project to examine the effectiveness of tactical approaches within a team-based sport of their choosing.
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.
001 Case Study 1; 2,000 word; Mid-Semester One 45%
002 Case Study 2; 2,000 word; End of Semester One 45%
003 Directed Activities Throughout Semester One 10%
