This module investigates how sport is structured and organised in the UK. The effects of policies and agencies involved in the governance and structure of sport will be focused upon. These agencies include examples such as Sport England, UK Coaching, DCMS, Youth Sports Trust and UK sport. Additionally, the historical development of sport in the UK will be discussed and how sport has evolved through the implementation of different strategies and policies since the initial release of the Wolfenden Report (1957). Finally, the role of the media will become a focus and how the way sport is portrayed impacts upon its development and upon cultural development and expectations.
Lectures will provide theory and facilitate an overall understanding of themes and concepts in sport, culture and media. The workshops will allow for discussion within small groups and students will be able to draw upon personal experience in order to develop their understanding.
