On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify the anatomy and properties of the musculoskeletal system and describe how this relates to the development of injury
Identify the approaches taken to determine the prevalence and diagnosis of injury
Diagnose a range of common injuries using appropriate techniques
Demonstrate safe and effective professional practice
The module provides a foundation to sports therapy and rehabilitation allowing students to be aware of the basic causes of injury and to be able to identify and diagnose a range of injuries. The module will involve the student diagnosing injury through clinical skills and reasoning through working in a professional and ethical manner with a client. The module will be split into three blocks of themes. The first theme will look at providing an overview of musculoskeletal anatomy, quantification of injury, causes of injury and diagnosis of injury. The second theme will then progress to look at specific regions of the upper body (including head and spine) providing a more in depth look at the region's anatomy and the causes and diagnosis of common injuries in those regions. The third theme will then progress to look at specific regions of the lower body providing a more in depth look at the region's anatomy and the causes and diagnosis of common injuries in those regions.
The module will consist of lectures where the key theoretical underpinning is established followed by a workshop where this theoretical underpinning is further explored and applies through a range of practical activities.

Further details relating to assessment
*N.B. BASRaT Accreditation stipulates that all practical components of the programme must be passed.
Directed activities: These consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.
Practical assessment: A 15 min practical assessment whereby students are presented with relevant materials and are required to diagnose a specific injury. In order to obtain a pass in the practical, safe and effective practice must be observed, details on this are outlined in the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation NP3.
Unseen exam: Written time-limited assessment of musculoskeletal properties (including anatomy) and how this relates to the development of sports injuries while also assessing the diagnosis and prevalence of sports injury.
Formative assessment: A series of multiple choice and short answer questions will be provided weekly for which students can check their basic understanding of the key topics to that specific week acting as formative assessment for the exam component of the module. A series of activities will be conducted in workshops where peer- and tutor-feedback can be obtained acting as formative assessment for the practical component of the module
