SHA4452 - Researching Children and Young People

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Locate and critically appraise academic literature.
Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts in research.
Appreciate ethical considerations in research.
Undertake basic qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
Present qualitative and quantitative data in the appropriate manner.

Content:

Literature searching using the appropriate databases and tools; Understanding and evaluating academic articles; An introduction to basic methodological considerations in research; An introduction to quantitative methods; An introduction to qualitative methods; Data collection techniques (quantitative and qualitative); Introduction to quantitative data analysis (descriptive statistics, levels of measurement, basic inferential statistics); Introduction to qualitative data analysis; Ethical considerations in research with specific reference to children and young people; Writing reports; Presentation of data following academic conventions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

In lectures, students gain knowledge and understanding of key research topics in addition to methods and processes. In the seminars, students develop deeper understanding of the lecture material through enquiry led learning and work in small groups to develop and carry out the research idea.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark. Formative assessment will take place in the module.
