On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically analyse interpretations of inclusion and special educational needs;
Critically evaluate theories of disability;
Synthesise research findings in relation to special educational needs, disability and inclusion;
Apply theories and theoretical perspectives to their own professional practice.
This module will introduce students to the legislative and policy context in relation to special educational needs and / or disability in educational contexts. Students will learn about the principles which underpin the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs (DfE, 2015) with an emphasis on pupil and parent participation and multi-agency collaboration. The module will address the barriers to learning, participation and achievement for pupils with communication and interaction needs, cognition and learning needs, those with social, mental and emotional health needs and pupils with sensory or physical needs. Strategies to improve outcomes for learners with special educational needs and/or disabilities will be addressed by drawing on evidence-based practice.
Students will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops and guided independent study.
